Helmsman's Course

This two-day course covers basic boat handling, engine checks, and safety. It is ideal for the new owner who is conscious of the difficulty and potential hazards of boat handling in the marina and wishes to obtain more enjoyment for all concerned by setting out on simple passages in safety.

It is also a useful course for the crew. Apart from the obvious safety value of having extra boat handlers on board, it adds interest if everyone can understand and contribute to successful passage-making.

ICC

This two-day qualifying course is a continuation of the Helmsman's Course.

Successful candidates will be awarded qualification of

International Certificate of Competence

(A requirement in Non UK waters)

Day Skipper

A skipper needs to be able to navigate and before attending the Day Skipper practical you would be well advised to attend an RYA Day Skipper shorebased theory course.

The practical course gives you a chance to take charge on short passages under instruction, with plenty of advice and help from the instructor.

The instructor can also help you to get the best out of modern electronic aids, such as GPS and radar, which are now virtually standard equipment on modern motor cruisers.

Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster

The more ambitious motor cruising skipper can improve his or her skills on a Coastal Skipper course. Before taking this course it is virtually essential to have attended the equivalent shorebased course, to ensure that time is not wasted teaching theory on board. Longer, more complex passages are undertaken with each trainee taking charge and learning to make full use of the boat in a variety of situations.

Don't expect to coast through this week without making the occasional error - part of this course is learning your strengths and weaknesses and gaining knowledge from your mistakes. An important quality encouraged on the course is the ability to take command and make decisions resulting in relaxed, well-planned passages and a happy crew.
